Tim Atkin Report 2020: Best Value White Wine 92 Points
90 Points Gilbert & Gaillard (France)
The Janina exudes rich honey flavours with notes of sweet apple, orange peel and lemon zest. A floral richness surprises on the palate which is carried through mid-palate with a delightful, fresh finish. The Janina is an elegant blend of 80% Eikendal grapes (clones 277, 95 and 96) and the remainder of the grapes (clone 277) are sourced from the Elgin Valley. Four different blocks, three different clones and from two different regions – a truly unique approach.
Food Pairing
Pair with Caesar Salad, Cheese Soufflé & Seared Salmon Teriyaki.
The Estate
At Eikendal they truly believe that good grapes make for a good wine, and more and more energy goes into our vineyards, with assistant winemaker and farm manager Edward Jonsson at the helm. While some of our vineyards are now in their 30’s and producing stellar wines, they also believe that constantly evaluation vineyard quality will help them identify blocks that need to be replaced and when they do, they only use the best plant material available on the market.
