The Thelema Mountain Vineyards Chardonnay shows a lovely fruit-focused character with a finely textured palate and long finish. The nose releases waves of grapefruit marmalade, ripe peach, blossoms and delicate yeasty aromas that translate with striking finesse on to a well-structured palate. Aromas of ripe peach, grapefruit marmalade, blossoms and complex yeasty flavours compliment the toasty oak in the wine. The palate is clean with a lovely texture and long finish.
A judicious dollop of oak imparts the wine with an opulent length and comforting texture, making it an excellent food-pairing wine. Serve slightly chilled with full-flavoured dishes such as lobster, tuna sashimi, crayfish, roast pork and chicken. Good now, will develop well for 3 years.
After falling in love with the wines of Puligny-Montrachet, former accountant Gyles Webb packed away his adding machine in Durban and moved the family to Stellenbosch. Converting a dilapidated fruit farm into vineyards, the pioneering producer quickly garnered recognition and accolades for his minimal interference winemaking philosophy and his pure and unmanipulated benchmark bottlings. In 2002, Webb expanded his operation to the cool climate coastal region of Elgin where the winery produces its Sutherland line of wines.
