The Wolftrap Red SMV 2022

Ripe plums, red currants, violets, Italian herbs and exotic spice dominate the nose. The perfume of the nose follows through with a certain smokiness and flavours of darker berries, liquorice, cardamom, star anise and cinnamon. The wine is fresh, plummy and vibrant with hints of fennel seed, orange peel, cloves and black pepper lingering on a juicy finish.

Syrah 91%; Mourvèdre 8%; Viognier 1%

Most of the Syrah grapes are from the Swartland region, and we love working with this variety for its robust character with its elegant aromas of violets and ripe plums. We have again accentuated the spicy, peppery profile yet retaining the juicy, fruity character which is a hallmark of our Wolftrap Red. Mourvèdre from the Swartland again lent a touch of austerity, a red fruit character and smoky body with the dash of Viognier contributing perfume and vibrancy. This classic, rustic Rhône style blend again over-delivers at its attractive price point.

The Estate
Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm’s name means ”ravine of the Boekenhout” (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making. In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier.
