Platter's Review: 4*
One of South Africa's most well-known and favourite reds. The Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend presents itself to gourmets with a deep, ruby red colour in the glass. Intense aromas of ripe raspberries become apparent and are supported by the scent of mocha and dark currants. At the palate, the sweet nuances of dark chocolate and the fruity taste of blackberry are harmoniously balanced. The dry, impressive finish lingers on the tongue for a long time.
Food pairing
The finish is dry and lengthy. Serve slightly chilled for summer seafood BBQ or room temperature with meat or Italian dishes
Grape
The Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend is constituted by the four grape varieties Pinotage 44%, Cabernet Sauvignon 37%, Merlot 13% and Cabernet Franc 6% Pinotage has the largest part in this cuvee and makes for the sweet berry aromas. Additionally, nuances of dark berries become apparent due to Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot on the other hand stands for soft, velvety plum nuances and generally delivers medium heavy red wine. Last but not least, Cabernet Franc is related to Cabernet Sauvignon and therefore creates a great harmony between the individual varieties.
The Estate
Situated on the lower slopes of Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, the fourth-generation family-run estate of Kanonkop sports 120 hectares devoted entirely to red grape varietals. The estate Kanonkop has succeeded again in creating a product at a high level with the Kanonkop Kadette. Kanonkop Estate has been described by those in the know as being the South African equivalent of a Premier Cru or First Growth. International awards accumulated over more than a decade have gone a long way to substantiate these claims.
