Platter Review: 4*
One of South Africa's most well-known and favourite reds. The bright ruby colour of this wine is complimented on the nose by attractive aromas of red currants, cherries, spice and a touch of mocha. The palate is lively and fresh, with succulent raspberry flavours. The fruit is supported by a firm, yet silky tannin structure. Savoury notes persist on the lengthy finish.
Food pairing
Chill it down for a refreshing summer drink with seafood, or serve at room temperature when paired with pizza, pasta, stews, roast chicken and barbequed meat.
Grape
37% Pinotage, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Pinotage has the largest part in this cuvee and makes for the sweet berry aromas. Additionally, nuances of dark berries become apparent due to Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot on the other hand stands for soft, velvety plum nuances and generally delivers medium heavy red wine. Last but not least, Cabernet Franc is related to Cabernet Sauvignon and therefore creates a great harmony between the individual varieties.
The Estate
Situated on the lower slopes of Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, the fourth-generation family-run estate of Kanonkop sports 120 hectares devoted entirely to red grape varietals. The estate Kanonkop has succeeded again in creating a product at a high level with the Kanonkop Kadette.
