“One of South Africa’s Top 20 Wineries 2016 - Best Track Record 2006 - 2015”

Our low-vigour, stony, clay-rich soil, cool maritime mesoclimate, naturally tiny yields of well under 35 hl/ha and our philosophy of expressing the terroir in the wines – give rise to a certain tightness, tannin line and elevated length to balance the richness and generosity of our Pinot noir. The Pinot noir is not overtly fruity, soft and “sweet” and it generally shows hints of that alluring savoury “primal” character along with a dark, spicy, complex primary fruit perfume.

The 2016 Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir is sourced from a 52-hectare vineyard set on low-vigour, stony, clay-rich soil situated in the cooler maritime micro-climate of Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Translucent in color, this wine begins with earthy aromatics of forest floor and tobacco leaf, with red currants and red berries coming together in the glass. Lithe, with a strong salinity, the wine shows a core of cherry, red berries, sweet tobacco and pomegranate flavors that connect with beautiful tension and a long lingering finish. Overall this is another beautiful vintage for this Pinot Noir and is expected to become more appealing as it evolves in the cellar. (Best 2017-2030)

Food Pairing
Grilled Norwegian Salmon with a Soy Ginger sauce, Mushroom Risotto, Guinea Fowl Pie.

The Estate

One of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa, this Pinot Noir and Chardonnay specialist pioneered viticulture in the beautiful, cool, maritime, Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation behind the old fishing village of Hermanus.

"This is our 35th vintage of Pinot noir on Hamilton Russell Vineyards. We find the 2015 more sumptuous and textured than the 2014 – and to borrow from the feedback we have received from numerous tasters, more Cote de Nuits than the more Cote de Beaune-like structure of the 2014"  Anthony Hamilton Russell, Proprietor, HAMILTON RUSSELL VINEYARDS.

“Today the winery (Hamilton Russell Vineyards) is one of the most recognized brands in the U.S. market, and rightfully so, as it has become the flag bearer for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from South Africa.” James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, February 2013
