Vitis Vinifera ’18: Gold
Platter’s Wine Guide 3½ Stars ’19, ‘18
4-star in Platter 2009 up to 2017
The superbly spicy Cape Ruby from De Krans Wine Cellar is masterfully crafted from sun-kissed Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Amarella and Souzoa berries. This celebrated Cape Ruby comes from a well-decorated lineage of award winning wines. A cascade of full-ripe red and blue berries greet the nose immediately, making way for subtle shades of cinnamon spice and soft violet aromas to unfold. The rich, full palate reveals ripe plum and cherry flavours that combine with decadent notes of chocolate and spice to create a complex profile that develops in intensity as the wine glides luxuriously over the tongue.
Portuguese varietals where planted in Calitzdorp during the late 1970’s with Tinta Barocca being the first to find its way to the Klein Karoo. Now Calitzdorp is known as South Africa’s Port Capital with these varietals leading the way. 30-year-old vines are planted in shallow Karoo sand/clay on Buffelsvlei. Vines are trellised and micro irrigated.
