Marie biscuits first appeared in South Africa as far back as 1898 when the Baumann family acquired a 2nd biscuit-making plant capable of producing ‘fancy biscuits’. It is said, however, that the 1st Marie was first produced in 1895 by British biscuit-maker Peek and Frean, and named in honour of the then Duke of Edinburgh’s bride … “Marie.” The name is generic and used by numerous manufacturers. But one particular Marie stands out. After 120 years in SA, BAKERS Blue Label® Maries are still amongst the biggest selling biscuits in the country, and are enjoyed as much today as they have been always.
