Tim Atkin MW SA Report: Top Rated - 94 Points
A classic Helderberg Cabernet Sauvignon showing characteristic sweet cedar wood, cold stone and light earthy tones with strong violet, red berry and black current fruit. The wine is elegantly structured with a typical tight and dry structure which finishes with great balance and freshness. The wine will age and develop harmoniously for 6 to 15 years.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the leading varietal on Waterford Estate, as selected by the terroir found on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. The well drained soils are very well suited to the growth of this varietal, driven by deep sandstone parent rocks and layered gravel with sporadic deposits of schist. The underlying clay in these soils help to buffer against the heat experienced in Stellenbosch during the summer months. The Helderberg Mountain region is known to produce Cabernet Sauvignon characterised by earthy aromatics, well-textured tannins and fresh finishes. These are some of the factors that contribute towards the Helderberg area being particularly well known for longevity in their wines.
