Eikendal Charisma 2018

94 pts Tim Atkin MW 2018
Platter Review: 4.5*

Charisma is always made from the same three varieties - mostly Syrah with Petit Verdot and Sangiovese - and is aged in larger wood. Dense and inky, it’s a rich, complex, layered wine with damson and blackberry fruit and plenty of ageworthy tannin. Good now, but will improve. 2020-28. France, Spain and Italy meet the New world in this unique red blend. Intense fruit on the nose which follows through to the palate. Silky tannins with a hint of sweetness ensure a smooth wine with delicious juicy fruit. Exudes classic violets and spice notes, the Shiraz lends a robust yet fresh structure to the wine, whilst the Petit Verdot adds inky black fruit and the Sangiovese the final, touches with its clean fruit and smack of tomato paste. Outstanding quality at a very affordable price, one of only three wines to win the Top Shiraz based blend in the country by the Shiraz SA association in 2016.

The Estate
At Eikendal they truly believe that good grapes make for a good wine, and more and more energy goes into our vineyards, with assistant winemaker and farm manager Edward Jonsson at the helm. While some of our vineyards are now in their 30’s and producing stellar wines, they also believe that constantly evaluation vineyard quality will help them identify blocks that need to be replaced and when they do, they only use the best plant material available on the market.
