The word braai is Afrikaans for “barbecue” or “grill,” and in Braai the Beloved Country, Jean Nel shares his favorite braairecipes from 15 years of cooking, training, and catering. Showing that the braai is so much more than just steaks and boerewors—a type of sausage—the book contains the secrets of cooking everything from a perfect tjoppie, or chops, to breads and salads. Not only does it present a host of delicious and unexpected recipes, the book goes beyond just cooking, covering everything you need to know about the braai including the tools you’ll need and their maintenance.

Jean Nel needs absolutely no encouragement, and very little excuse, to have a braai. He loves a braai so much, he decided to make a living out of it. What better way for a kid from a Karoo farm to earn himself a crust than by cooking for other people on an open fire, and even teaching his fellow South Africans how to braai. Fifteen years, and thousands of cooking fires later he has assembled a collection of our classic braai recipes, as well as a few pearlers destined to become family favourites all over this great land.
